Cruise Essentials Gear Guide

Every cruise list on the internet recommends the same twenty things. These are the twelve that actually solve a problem you will have, with the reason attached — and one that comes with a warning, because most ships will not let you use it.

Before you click anything

These are affiliate links. If you buy through one, Amazon pays us a small commission and you pay exactly the same price. It has never changed what goes on a list here — two things on this page carry a warning telling you when not to buy them, which is not how you sell more of something.

We do not quote prices or star ratings. Both change hourly, and a stale number is a false claim. Check them on the day.

In the cabin

Cruise cabin walls and ceilings are steel. That single fact is behind most of this group, and it is also why the adhesive hooks people pack come straight back off.

Pink cup-shaped travel pill dispenser with separate sections and a twist spout

Travel pill dispenser, 7 sections, twist spout

The one I use myself, after a purse full of pill bottles cost me a medicine for a whole trip and a big pill box spilled across a cabin table. It is small and cup-shaped, the sections keep each medicine apart, and you twist the spout to the one you need. I label every section. Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Disney and the CDC all say to keep medicines in their original labelled containers, so check with your doctor and your cruise line before you leave the bottles at home.

Magnetic motion-sensor night light

Magnetic motion-sensor night light

Sticks to the steel wall, USB rechargeable, warm white so it does not wake the other person. An interior cabin at 3am is genuinely pitch black — no window, no streetlight, nothing.

Battery-operated cabin fan

Battery-operated cabin fan

5000mAh battery, five speeds, magnetic so it hangs off the ceiling or wall rather than eating the one free surface in the room.

Worth knowing. Sellers label these “cruise ship approved”. No cruise line has approved anything — that is the seller's phrase. What actually matters is that it runs on a battery: Princess and Holland America both list mains-powered small fans under their surge-protector rules, and a battery fan sidesteps that argument entirely.

Steel walls again. Hang wet swimsuits, lanyards, hats, a tote. Ten is more than you think you need and about right.

Worth knowing. If anyone in the cabin uses a walker or has trouble bending, put one hook at bed height on the wall beside the pillow for glasses, a lanyard and a torch. It is the cheapest accessibility fix on this entire site.

Packing smart

The closet in a standard cabin is narrower than a kitchen cupboard, and there is nowhere to put an empty suitcase except under the bed.

Compression packing cubes, 6 pack

Compression packing cubes, 6 pack

Zip the second zip and the stack halves in height. Also means you unpack into drawers in about four minutes rather than living out of a case all week.

Vacuum storage bags with wireless pump

Vacuum storage bags with wireless pump

Fifteen bags in three sizes with a rechargeable pump, so you can re-compress for the journey home without hunting for a vacuum cleaner.

Worth knowing. These save volume, not weight. If you are flying to the port, the airline's bag limit is in pounds and compression does nothing for it.

Cruise luggage tag holders, 6 pack

Cruise luggage tag holders, 6 pack

Clear sleeves with a loop. The paper tags the line emails you to print will tear off a handle somewhere between the drop-off and the ship, and then your case is anonymous.

Port and pool days

Everything in this group gets wet, and three of them exist because tender ports are not gentle.

Floating waterproof phone pouch, 2 pack

Floating waterproof phone pouch, 2 pack

Touchscreen works through it, lanyard round the neck, and it floats. Floating is the whole feature — a sealed pouch that sinks has solved nothing.

Waterproof waist pack

Waterproof waist pack

Sealed roll-top on a belt, sized for a phone, cards and a folded document. Good on a catamaran, a wet tender, a beach with no locker.

Worth knowing. Carry a photocopy of the passport ashore and leave the passport in the cabin safe, unless the port specifically requires the original. Ask at Guest Services the night before — they will tell you which it is.

Quick-dry water shoes

Quick-dry water shoes

Wide toe box, grippy sole, dries on the walk back. Tender piers, rocky beaches and wet pool decks are where ankles get turned.

Each folds to roughly the size of a credit card. Caribbean afternoon squalls arrive in about four minutes, and Alaska simply rains.

Beach day only — not the ship's pool

One item, and it comes with the biggest caveat on this page. Read it before you buy.

Water hammock float

Water hammock float

Four positions, mesh seat, packs down small. Lovely on a private island beach or a resort day in port.

Worth knowing. Do not pack this for the ship's pool. See the warning below.

The float is for the beach, not the lido deck

MSC publishes it plainly: “Inflatable beds, rafts and similar items may not be inflated or used aboard but can be used in destination ports where allowed.” Most lines bar floats and inflatables from ship pools, which are small, crowded and shallow. Buy this one for a private island day or a beach in port, and leave it in the bag on sea days. We would rather tell you that than sell you a float you cannot use.

Print it or pin it

The one-page version of this list, with every item laid out to photograph well on a pinboard: download the Cruise Essentials flyer. The flyer has no buy links in it — Amazon does not permit affiliate links in a downloadable file, so the flyer sends you back to this page, where they live.
