Toddler Cruise Gear Guide

A toddler needs about ten things a grown-up does not, and roughly half of what gets sold as “cruise essentials for kids” is a rubber ring you will not be allowed to use. This is the short list, with the reason attached to each one.

Before you click anything

These are affiliate links. If you buy through one, Amazon pays us a small commission and you pay exactly the same price. It has never changed what goes on a list here — two things on this page carry a warning telling you when not to buy them, which is not how you sell more of something.

We do not quote prices or star ratings. Both change hourly, and a stale number is a false claim. Check them on the day.

Pool and beach days

Start here, because one item in this group is not optional and most parents find that out at the pool gate.

Toddler swim vest

Toddler swim vest

Neoprene vest with arm floats, labelled 20–30 lb and 18 months to 2 years. Good for confidence in a shallow pool with an adult in arm's reach.

Worth knowing. A swim vest is a swim aid, not a life jacket. It is not Coast Guard approved and it is not a substitute for one. Every ship carries child and infant life jackets and will lend you one free — ask at the muster drill. Never leave a child in a vest unsupervised.

Reusable swim diaper

Reusable swim diaper

Snap-sided, absorbent, washes out in the cabin sink and dries overnight on the balcony rail. Pack two so one is always dry.

Worth knowing. This is the one genuinely non-optional item on the page. Every line requires a swim diaper for a child who is not toilet trained, and several bar untrained children from the main pools entirely regardless of what they are wearing. Check your line before you promise anyone a swim.

Toddler water shoes

Toddler water shoes

Breathable mesh, pull-on, dries fast. Pool decks get genuinely hot by midday and tender piers are rough concrete and barnacle.

Collapsible sand bucket set

Collapsible sand bucket set

Three buckets, shovels and a mesh bag that folds flat. The folding is the entire reason it is here — a rigid bucket costs you a quarter of a small suitcase.

Sun protection

The Caribbean sun at 11am is not the sun you are used to, and more ports restrict sunscreen chemistry every year.

Sun hat with neck flap

Sun hat with neck flap

UPF 50+, wide brim, flap down the back of the neck, chin toggle so it survives a breeze on deck. The listing states ages 3 to 10.

Polarized kids' sunglasses

Polarized kids' sunglasses

Flexible TPE frames that bend rather than snap, UV400 lenses, and a strap. The strap is why this pair rather than any other pair.

Mineral SPF 50 sunscreen

Mineral SPF 50 sunscreen

Non-nano zinc, fragrance free, travel size. The listing states it is made without oxybenzone and octinoxate.

Worth knowing. Those two chemicals are the ones restricted in Hawaii, Key West, Bonaire, Aruba and Palau. “Reef safe” is a marketing phrase with no legal definition, so buy on the ingredient list rather than the badge on the front.

The little kit

Small, dull, and the difference between a bad afternoon and a non-event. This bag goes in the cabin, not the hold.

Kids' insect repellent

Kids' insect repellent

Plant-based, pump spray rather than aerosol. The listing states it is safe for children six months and up.

Character plasters

Character plasters

Twenty, assorted sizes. For a scraped knee at this age roughly half the cure is being allowed to choose which one.

Kids' hand sanitizer spray

Kids' hand sanitizer spray

Three small bottles, plant-based alcohol, fits a pocket. Useful at the buffet, where everyone touches the same tongs.

Worth knowing. Read the warning below before you rely on it.

Hand sanitizer does not kill norovirus

Norovirus is the one bug cruise ships genuinely struggle with, and alcohol gel does not kill it — the virus has no outer envelope for alcohol to break down. Soap, warm water and twenty seconds does. Use the gel at the buffet by all means, but wash small hands properly before every meal, and do not let the bottle talk you out of the sink.

Print it or pin it

The one-page version of this list, with every item laid out to photograph well on a pinboard: download the Toddler Cruise flyer. The flyer has no buy links in it — Amazon does not permit affiliate links in a downloadable file, so the flyer sends you back to this page, where they live.
