Military cruise rates are open to active personnel, retirees and veterans with an honorable discharge, and to spouses of actively deployed or deceased personnel. Proof is required at the pier: a white ID card for active duty, blue or red for retired, or a DD 214 plus photo ID for veterans. Norwegian publishes 10% off cruise fare after ID.me verification.
If you served, or your spouse served, this is real money and every major line publishes the terms in detail. It is also the one discount with a published penalty for getting it wrong, so let us be precise.
Who qualifies
Royal Caribbean requires at least one guest in the stateroom to be one of the following:
- Active personnel currently serving in the US Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard, Reserves, or Canadian National Defense
- Retired from any of those — minimum 20 years' service, medical retirement, or 100% disability
- Veterans with an honorable discharge serving a minimum of 2 years, or 6 months in an active war zone
- Spouses of actively deployed military personnel, eligible to book one stateroom, with the eligible spouse occupying it. Spouses of deceased military personnel also qualify.
The ID they will actually ask for
This is published by colour, which sounds fussy until you are at the pier.
| Active duty | White Uniformed Services ID card |
|---|---|
| Active duty retired | Blue card |
| Reserve retired | Red card |
| 100% disabled | Tan card |
| Veterans | A DD 214 plus a current photo ID |
| Spouses | Pink or tan dependent military ID |
| Canadian retirees | Green NDI-75 card |
What it is actually worth
Most lines will not publish an amount. Two do.
| Celebrity | $25 per person for guests 1 and 2 in Inside or Ocean View. $100 per person in Veranda, Concierge Class, AquaClass or The Retreat. |
|---|---|
| Norwegian | 10% off the cruise fare on any cruise once verified, with an option for 20% off select cruises and staterooms. The 10% applies to Inside, Oceanview and Balcony and excludes guarantee categories; the 20% applies only to guarantee categories IX, OX and BX. |
| Royal Caribbean | A military rate exists with the eligibility above; the amount is not published and varies by sailing. |
| Carnival | Has a military page and a booking filter, but its eligibility and documentation terms did not render for us. Carnival states it "sails more active and retired armed forces members than any other cruise line." |
Norwegian's is the easiest to use, and it is worth saying why
Norwegian verifies through ID.me rather than at the pier, and once you are verified, eligibility is "permanently associated with your My NCL account." You do it once and it is done.
Their eligibility list is also the broadest we found: "active members, veterans, spouses and surviving spouses," across Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Space Force, National Guard, NOAA Corps and the US Public Health Service. Their own FAQ answers the veteran question with a flat "Yes."
Worth noting for the Norwegian offer: it combines with their current promotions and Free at Sea, but not with their teacher or first responder discounts, which are separate programmes.
The combining rule, again
As with senior and resident fares, military rates do not stack with them. Royal Caribbean's terms list senior and military as mutually exclusive, and Celebrity's promotions terms exclude several categories — while Celebrity's military deal page says the offer "is combinable with any of our current promotions." Those two statements are not the same claim, and we are flagging it rather than picking one.
Practical answer: price the sailing with the military rate, then price it again without, with whatever general promotion is running. Take the cheaper.
Questions I get asked
Do veterans qualify, or only active duty?
Veterans qualify on every line that publishes terms, with an honorable discharge and a minimum service period. Norwegian says so in one word: yes.
Does my spouse qualify if I am the veteran?
Norwegian publishes spouses and surviving spouses as eligible. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity publish spouses of actively deployed or deceased personnel, with a pink or tan dependent ID.
Do I need the discount at booking or at the pier?
Both. You select the rate when booking and prove it at check-in. Norwegian is the exception, verifying up front through ID.me.
Can everyone in my cabin get it?
Royal Caribbean requires at least one guest in the stateroom to qualify. Celebrity's published amounts apply to guests 1 and 2.
What about first responders and teachers?
Norwegian runs separate programmes for both and publishes that they do not combine with the military offer. We have not verified those terms yet.
