Cruise lines publish discounts they never offer you at booking. Royal Caribbean's first responder rate covers active, retired or volunteer police, fire and EMS, and its military rate extends to spouses of deceased personnel with a Pink or Tan Dependent Military ID. Norwegian discounts active PreK-12 teachers, school employees and professors up to 15% via ID.me. Holland America gives nurses, doctors and first responders a $100 onboard credit per stateroom via SheerID. Princess lists the categories but states there is not a current offer available.

None of these rates are offered to you. Not one. They do not appear on the booking screen, the phone agent will not volunteer them, and nothing in your confirmation email will mention the one you qualified for and missed.
That is the only thing they have in common — and it is the whole point of this page. You have to go and ask.
Last year we booked a cruise for my stepmom. The family calls her Pollywog. We got her the senior rate, because we knew about that one.
What we did not know is that she was entitled to the veteran’s rate as well. Her husband served. She is a veteran’s widow, and that rate carries over to her.
Nobody told us. Not the booking page, not the phone agent. We left it sitting there.
Where the box actually is
Before the list, the mechanical bit, because it is the step people skip.
If you book online, there is a box to tick for special or restricted rates, and it sits before you put your dates in. Scroll past it and the rate simply never appears in your results. If you book by phone, say it out loud and specifically: “Both of us are over fifty-five — is there a senior rate on this sailing?” Name the category. Do not ask “are there any discounts,” because the answer to that is always no.
Military, veterans — and widows
Royal Caribbean’s rate covers active duty, retired personnel, and veterans with an honorable discharge — two or more years of service, or six or more months in an active war zone. And then there is the line almost nobody knows:
“Spouses of deceased military personnel are also eligible for the military rate. As proof of eligibility, spouses must present the Pink or Tan Dependent Military ID upon check-in.”

First responders — and this is where the lines disagree
Four lines publish something. They do not publish the same thing, and the differences matter more than the headline numbers.

Read the “who counts” column again. Royal Caribbean explicitly includes people who are retired and people who were volunteers. Norwegian’s wording does not. If you drove an ambulance for your county in the eighties, or sat on a volunteer fire crew for a few years, Royal Caribbean is the one to ask first.
Teachers — and it is not only teachers
Norwegian runs the clearest of these, and the eligibility list is much wider than the name suggests.

School employees. Not teaching staff — employees. If you drive a school bus, work in the office, run the cafeteria or keep the building standing, you are on that list. So are college and university professors.
The benefit is up to 15% off cruise fares, and Norwegian says it stacks with their Free at Sea package. Verification is through ID.me, takes about five minutes, and you only do it once — it links permanently to your My NCL account.
One more restriction worth knowing: the discount covers the verified teacher’s entire stateroom, one stateroom per verified teacher per sailing. A spouse cannot use it independently unless they are verified too.
Nurses, doctors and healthcare workers
Holland America publishes the clearest offer here.

Did your son or daughter work for an airline?
The interline rate is the least known thing on this page. Royal Caribbean’s eligibility list includes two entries people never expect:
“4. Parents of currently employed Airline Employee.”
“6. Retired employee from a domestic or international commercial passenger airline, cargo carrier, Air Traffic Controllers or GDS Employees.”

If an adult child of yours works for an airline, you are eligible through them — a parent, not a dependent. And if you retired out of an airline yourself, you still qualify on your own account, with a retiree badge or a letter from your former employer.
The list also covers spouses and domestic partners of current employees, staff at FedEx, Airborne Express and UPS, air traffic controllers, and the people who run Sabre, Worldspan, Galileo, Apollo and Amadeus. Proof of eligibility is due within 48 hours of booking.
The one that is not about who you are
Every rate above depends on your job, your service or your family. This one is open to everybody and almost nobody uses it.

Before you claim anything: they do check

Claim what is yours. Take the paperwork that proves it. Those two things belong together, and any page that tells you the first without the second is not doing you a favour.
Work out which categories you fall into before you look at a single price. Most people qualify for more than one and never check. Your service, your late husband’s service, the job you retired from thirty years ago, the volunteer crew you sat on, your daughter’s airline job, the school district you drive a bus for.
Then verify once, in advance. Norwegian’s ID.me check takes five minutes and lasts forever. Holland America’s SheerID form is the same idea. Do it on a wet afternoon, not the week you are trying to book.
Then ask by name. Tick the box online. Say the category out loud on the phone. And if you might qualify two ways, price it both ways — these rates almost never stack with each other.

Do cruise lines give discounts to teachers?
Norwegian does. It covers active PreK-12 classroom teachers, principals, assistant principals, school employees and college or university professors, at up to 15% off cruise fares, verified through ID.me. Note the wording is “active” — retired teachers are not listed.
